Smiths Electric Clocks Octagonal Bakelite School Clock C1930s

£225.00

This delightful early “Smiths Electric Clocks” Bakelite wall clock may have once graced the wall of a schoolhouse, factory or office in the early 1930s. The age of the clock can be told by the branding on the dial of these mains electric clocks. As far my research from various sources, the oldest just had “SMITH” then “SMITH ELECTRIC” then “SMITH SECTRIC” then they added the s to the branding starting in the late 1930s as “SMITHS SECTRIC”.

This is a very unusual, rare example, the dial contains a “tell-tale” style seconds indicator which lets you know the exact seconds at a glance. There is a hidden plate with 1-60 and a window through to the dial to show the exact second.

These clocks have timeless style but are a utilitarian product, built to last however in this octagonal shape there is at least a nod to the Art Deco styling that was prevalent at the time of manufacture. Many of these clocks motors wore out or ceased up an had to be converted to quartz as per a couple of other Smiths Bakelite wall clocks I have listed. This one is special as the motor is still running and functional through the mains cord (although this is fairly short and you may want to extend for versatility of use).

In good vintage condition with standard signs of wear, (apologies for the dust in the photos!)

Measures approximately 23cm in diameter.
